The European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood, Stefan Füle, spoke about the solid relationship and beneficial partnership between the European Union and Moldova during the EU-Moldova Forum that took place yesterday in Berlin, Germany. The event was organised by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Robert-Bosch-Stiftung.
As Commissioner Stefan Füle stated: “Moldova has changed, and continues to change quickly. From an uncertain supporter of the Eastern Partnership, it has turned into its most prominent member, into a staunchly committed and reliable partner.”
In addition, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood said that after the implementation of the necessary reforms, EU will induce an even fuller reform agenda for Moldova in order to achieve European standards and values for Moldovan citizens. The reforms will also boost cooperation in foreign and security policy, resolve to regional issues and promote contacts between citizens. He has also called Germany to fully support the further unfolding of the visa liberalization process.
Furthermore, he has recognized that Moldova has made great progress in transforming its state and society. It is the first country of the Eastern Partnership to adopt a law against discrimination. Plus, it promotes measures as to eradicate corruption and fight impunity.
EU has contributed to Moldova’s reform and as the Commissioner announced this year’s assistance will far exceed the symbolic threshold of €100 million. Together with the Eastern Partnership Integration and Cooperation programme and macro-financial assistance it will account for €152 million - €41 per capita, which is a remarkable amount for support.
Finally, Commissioner Füle stated that if Moldova succeeds in delivering its commitments and achieving substantial reform, it will be able to apply in order to become a full member of the European Union.
