European Commissioner for Enlargement Štefan Füle called for political stability in Moldova as it will help the country to grow and provide concrete deliverables for the citizens of the country.

Füle stressed that political stability in Moldova should be based in solid foundations. This can be achieved by prudent constitutional reform, deep judicial reform, the fight against corruption and the improvement of the business climate. “The EU provides considerable means to help implement these reforms and will further step up its support, if Moldova engages in earnest on the path of institutional reforms,” Commissioner underlined.

On 3 October Füle met with the Prime Minister of Moldova Iurie Leancă in Chișinau. Besides the call for political stability, the Commissioner said that the citizens of Moldova's should know more about the benefits of EU-Moldova cooperation and the future Association Agreement. Before his meeting with the Moldovan PM, Füle gave an interview to Moldova.org stressing that the Association agreement will provide adequate transition periods for the Moldovan firms to adjust in the economic environment. Moreover, he said that Moldovan economy will grow because of the agreement and that the citizens will enjoy lower prices and better quality products.

However, national polls show that Moldovan society is split. Fifty per cent wants a European integration course and the other 50 per cent desires Eurasian integration in association with Russia. Six days ago, Leancă gave an interview in Deutsche Welle saying that Europeanisation would, will benefit all citizens of Modova in contrast with the Eurasian integration which is a project that hasn't really been thought through. “Advantages of Europeanization are tangible, and visible in the example of other countries. In contrast, the prospects of a Eurasian union are not clear,” the Prime Minister of Moldova said.

Leancă underlined that all the citizens of Moldova wants one thing, a well-functioning society and political stability. “When you ask our citizens if they want functioning institutions, fair justice, separation of powers, a reliable state prosecutor, and protection of rights, then you get a positive answer,” he stressed.
